For decades, the scientific community believed they had found the definitive ancestor of the modern octopus. A 300-million-year-old fossil from the Mazon Creek formation, long celebrated in the Guinness Book of Records, was thought to be the benchmark for cephalopod evolution. However, new high-resolution scans have shattered this long-held belief. The specimen, once thought to possess eight arms and an ink sac, has been revealed as a case of extreme biological decay—a ‘ghost’ of a creature that was never an octopus at all.

This discovery serves as a humbling reminder of how little we truly know about the layers of time beneath our feet. When organic matter is subjected to millions of years of pressure and chemical changes, the line between reality and illusion becomes dangerously thin. What scientists originally interpreted as ancient tentacles turned out to be the structural remains of a completely different organism, obscured by the veil of deep time.

This phenomenon of ‘mistaken identity’ is something Owen knows all too well. In ‘The First Fracture,’ Owen discovers that the past is not a static museum, but a living, shifting reality. The purple ‘Time Fractures’ he encounters don’t just bridge eras; they distort the very fabric of biological truth. Just as modern technology revealed the truth behind this 300-million-year-old mystery, Owen’s amulet serves as the ultimate lens—the only tool capable of distinguishing a natural creature from one warped by the instability of the fractures. In the Triassic wilds, a shadow isn’t always a predator, and a fossil isn’t always what it seems.
